But here's where it gets even more concerning: A measles outbreak has forced the temporary closure of Camp East Montana, a massive immigration detention center located on Fort Bliss Army base in El Paso, Texas. U.S. Representative Veronica Escobar, whose district includes the camp, revealed that 14 active measles cases have been confirmed, leading to the isolation of 112 individuals. The facility will remain off-limits to visitors and attorneys until at least March 19th or 20th.
While acknowledging the necessity of containing the outbreak, Escobar expressed alarm at the situation. She highlighted the cruel irony: a preventable disease has created conditions where detainees are cut off from in-person legal representation, relying solely on virtual communication. This raises serious concerns about their access to justice and due process.
And this is the part most people miss: This isn't just about a temporary closure. Camp East Montana, opened in 2023 under a controversial $1.3 billion contract awarded to a company with no prior experience running ICE facilities, has been plagued by reports of overcrowding, unsanitary conditions, and the rapid spread of illnesses. Detainees describe a harsh environment where an average of 3,000 people live in close quarters, making disease prevention nearly impossible and restful sleep a rarity.
The measles outbreak serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by individuals in immigration detention. It also raises questions about the oversight and accountability of private companies managing these facilities.
