Robbie Williams Breaks Beatles' Record for Most UK No. 1 Albums (2026)

Robbie Williams breaks Beatles' record for UK No 1 albums, with 16th chart-topper

Robbie Williams has achieved a remarkable feat, surpassing the Beatles' record for the most UK No 1 albums. With his 16th chart-topping album, Britpop, Williams has solidified his place as the all-time leader in the UK music charts. This achievement is all the more impressive considering the Beatles' iconic status and their 37-year journey to reach 15 No 1 albums.

Britpop, a tribute to the energetic and influential guitar music of the mid-1990s, was an instant hit, reaching the top spot in its first week of release. Williams' success is evident across his studio albums, with only one exception, 2009's Reality Killed the Video Star, which was kept off the top by boy band JLS. Additionally, he has three greatest hits compilations and a soundtrack to the biopic Better Man under his belt.

The release of Britpop was strategically timed to avoid competition from Taylor Swift's The Life of a Showgirl. Williams moved the release date forward to January 16, a relatively uncompetitive week, to maximize its chances of success. This decision paid off, as Britpop went straight to No 1.

Williams' dedication to breaking the record is evident in his words, describing Britpop as the album he wanted to create and release after leaving Take That in 1995. The Guardian's pop critic, Alexis Petridis, praised the album, highlighting its catchy melodies and enjoyable nature. The Beatles, on the other hand, achieved their record with their greatest hits album, one of four chart-topping albums released after their split.

While Williams' achievement is impressive, some pop fans may debate whether he is 'greater' than the Beatles. However, he did achieve his record in 29 years, compared to the Beatles' 37 years to reach their 15 No 1s. The Rolling Stones and Taylor Swift each have 14 No 1s, while Elvis Presley and Bruce Springsteen have 13 and 12, respectively.

Despite not holding the record for the most UK No 1 singles, with Presley still holding that title, Williams has made his mark in the music industry. His recent single, Candy, reached No 1 in 2012, showcasing his continued success. In the singles chart, British rapper Dave earned his fourth No 1 with his Tems collaboration, Raindance.
