The Pixel Watch 4's new tricks: Are they a step forward or a blast from the past?
Google's latest update for the Pixel Watch 4 has introduced some nifty one-handed gestures, but is this innovation truly groundbreaking? As a seasoned Wear OS user, I can't help but reminisce about the platform's past, leaving me with a lingering question: Did Google nail it better a decade ago?
This week's 9to5Google Weekender delves into the new gestures, which include the 'double pinch' and 'wrist turn' actions. These gestures, as Google explains, enable users to effortlessly scroll through notifications, dismiss alerts, snooze alarms, manage timers, and even answer calls. It's a handy upgrade, no doubt, but let's dig deeper.
The 'double pinch' gesture is a game-changer for long notifications, allowing users to quickly scroll through messages without interrupting their current task. However, the 'wrist turn' gesture, while intriguing, still has room to prove its worth. But here's where it gets controversial—a decade ago, Google introduced similar gestures on Wear OS, then known as Android Wear.
Back then, users could flick their wrist 'out' to scroll down and 'in' to scroll up, a feature that worked seamlessly on the watch face. This gesture was a true time-saver, especially for notifications. Additionally, shaking the watch would take users back to the watch face, a clunky but occasionally useful feature.
These gestures were removed in Wear OS 3 due to reliability issues and their impact on battery life. Samsung later introduced its own version, inspired by the Apple Watch. But here's the twist—I believe there's a sweet spot between the old and the new. What if we brought back the wrist flick for the notification feed? It would be a one-handed gesture powerhouse, especially if it only scrolled in one direction, ensuring reliability.
Google seems to have made the new gestures less sensitive, requiring a more deliberate action. So, did Google nail it better in the past, or is this new iteration a step forward? It's a debate worth having, and I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
