Mathieu van der Poel, riding for Alpecin-Deceuninck, outmuscled a strong challenge from Thibau Nys of Baloise-Glowi Lions to clinch victory in the Namur round of the UCI World Cup. The world champion faced persistent pressure from the rising Belgian star throughout the race, ultimately capitalizing on a late-turning crash by Nys to surge clear and claim his sixth Namur triumph.
Michael Vanthourenhout of Pauwels Sauzen–Altez Industriebouw completed the podium, contributing significantly to an intense day of racing, while Lars van der Haar, racing for Baloise-Glowi Lions, formed part of the elite quartet that dominated the lead pack.
How the race unfolded
Starting from the fourth row, Van der Poel faced an opportunity for early advantage as front-row riders vied to set the pace into the opening lap. Toon Vandenbosch led the early ascent, with Vanthourenhout close behind, while Van der Poel methodically carved his way through the field.
Within the first two minutes, the world champion had broken into the top 10, continuing to pick off riders as Vanthourenhout pressed the pace from the front. Van der Poel rode with patience, moving up midway up the final bank before the finish straight as others were forced to run. He found himself on Vanthourenhout’s wheel as the field thinned on the second lap, with Nys bridging a gap to join a small chasing group.
On the second lap, Nys surged to the front along a long off-camber section, gaining a few bike-lengths before Van der Poel rejoined the back of the leading pack. Around 15 riders remained within 10 seconds of the front as the second lap ended.
Lap 3 saw Vanthourenhout push the pace, forming a leading quartet with Van der Haar, Van der Poel, and Nys. They built a nine-second cushion over the rest of the field entering lap 4.
As Van der Haar increased the tempo on a descent, Van der Poel crashed over his handlebars but quickly remounted and charged up the next climb to rejoin the lead group. Sensing Van der Poel’s momentary weakness, Nys pressed forward, and Van der Poel settled into the wheels, staying close as the group shuffled and reorganized.
Mid-race, Van der Poel took the lead from Van der Haar on the longest climb, climbing steadily to bridge to the Belgian duo up front while remaining patient and conserving energy behind them.
By lap 6, Van der Haar was losing contact, leaving a trio at the front with Nys continuing to pull the strings. A temporary bike change for Nys created a brief gap, allowing Van der Poel to ease off and allow Van der Haar back into contention. The Baloise-Glowi Lions rider immediately attacked on the opening climb of lap 7, but the other three stayed in touch.
Van der Poel then surged on the longest climb, opening a gap to Van der Haar and Vanthourenhout. Nys remained in touch as the pace intensified and the crowd roared his name on the back sections, setting up a final one-lap dash for victory on lap 8.
On the finishing straight, Van der Poel, Nys, and Vanthourenhout reformed, only for Van der Poel to seize the moment on the initial climb. A late descent forced Nys to chase, and a crash temporarily shuffled the order, giving Van der Poel the window he needed to press clear on the long climb. He extended his advantage to secure an unassailable lead as the field clung to his wheel in pursuit.

Van der Poel topped the field, Nys finished second, and Vanthourenhout took third.
