Champ Monds, a highly-touted four-star prospect, initially projected as the top quarterback in the 2028 cycle, has made a bold move, reclassifying to the 2027 cycle. This decision has put the spotlight firmly on him and the schools vying for his talent.
After accelerating his recruitment timeline, Monds is now focused on identifying his top college choices. A key visit this past weekend took him to Tallahassee for Florida State's junior day, signaling the Seminoles' strong interest. They are eager to keep the young star close to home.
Reports from Rivals' Steve Wiltfong indicate FSU's serious involvement in Monds' recruitment. The Seminoles are looking to make a significant impact.
"Everything," stated Wonderful Monds, Champ's father, when asked about FSU's appeal, highlighting the program's need for a quarterback and the family's established relationship with Coach Norvell, whom they've known since Champ was just ten years old. Their interactions, including camp visits, have fostered a strong connection, built on genuine relationships.
But here's where it gets controversial... FSU recently signed Jaden O'Neal, a four-star quarterback from Oklahoma, in the 2026 cycle and Kevin Sperry, a three-star signal-caller, in the 2025 cycle. Interestingly, the last time FSU secured a quarterback from Florida was back in 2019 with Jordan Travis. Does this recent history suggest a pattern or strategic shift?
According to the Rivals Industry Ranking, which combines data from major recruiting services, Monds is currently ranked No. 335 overall and No. 22 among quarterbacks in the 2027 cycle. He also holds the No. 35 spot in Florida's state rankings.
However, Rivals' own rankings paint a different picture, placing the 6-foot-2.5, 220-pound quarterback at No. 138 overall and No. 11 among quarterbacks in the 2027 Rivals300.
And this is the part most people miss... Monds' sophomore season was disrupted by injury. Despite missing a significant portion of the season, he showcased his talent in five games, throwing for 691 yards and seven touchdowns without any interceptions. He completed 45 of 63 attempts and added a rushing touchdown. His team, Vero Beach, ultimately lost in the FHSAA Class 7A state championship game, finishing the season with an impressive 14-1 record.
As a freshman in 2024, Monds displayed remarkable potential, throwing for 2,234 yards and 23 touchdowns with only five interceptions in 12 games. He also added 502 rushing yards and nine more touchdowns on the ground.
According to Rivals' Director of Scouting and Rankings, Charles Power, Monds is a true dual-threat quarterback with impressive speed. Power noted that Monds is physically mature for his age and already possesses the skills to make an impact on the field.
