You might think that after witnessing their team lose the Ashes in just 11 days, many of these supporters would have packed their bags and headed home. But you would be mistaken.

With more than 35,000 British tourists flocking to Australia for the series, not only did they enhance the atmosphere at the matches, but they also provided a significant boost to the local economy.

The Barmy Army, initially created by two friends during the 1994/95 Ashes in Australia, started as a casual supporter group celebrating the English team. Over the years, it has evolved into one of the largest and most recognizable fan clubs in international sports. It's now a business that hires staff to offer various travel packages and sell merchandise.

Neil, a member of the Barmy Army team, shared, "We’ve had over 3,000 clients visit here to enjoy the cricket; some stayed for seven weeks, while others joined us for just the last week. They’ve loved exploring all the major cities."

Gary, a supporter from Cornwall, expressed his enthusiasm about joining the tour, stating, "This is my first time with the Barmy Army, and it’s been an incredible experience. You definitely learn how to drink and sing along with everyone!"

Despite Australia's dominance on the field, the visitors continued their adventures, making an impact on various local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, retail, and entertainment venues. Tim Harcourt, the chief economist at the University of Technology Sydney’s Centre for Sport, noted that many regions benefited from the inflow of tourists.

"A lot of them opt for camper vans to explore Australia, which means they contribute not only to the cities hosting the Tests but also to regional areas," he explained. "Attending a Test match gives them more chances to support local businesses unrelated to cricket. I believe pubs are thriving especially well."

Even though Cricket Australia projected losses of up to $30 million from the brief Perth and Melbourne Tests, this situation presented a distinctive opportunity for Australia’s economy.

"These cricket fans spend a substantial amount of money; obviously, they’re on holiday and enjoying the games. Australia is undoubtedly one of their favorite destinations," Beccy, a merchandising staff member of the Barmy Army, mentioned. "Regardless of the cricket outcomes, everyone is singing, chanting, and even crafting new songs along the way."

The Boxing Day Test also benefited local sports, as a group from the Barmy Army made their presence felt at two A-League Men fixtures, captivating the crowd with their iconic chants.

2025 was a monumental year for sports in Australia, and British travelers fully embraced and appreciated the experience. The British and Irish Lions tour saw a staggering 72 percent increase in visitors from the UK in July, with estimates suggesting that cricket fans injected hundreds of millions of dollars into the Australian economy over the summer.

Although the Ashes didn’t unfold in the manner the Brits had hoped, it’s clear that Australia can expect their return when the next major sporting event comes around.
