Air NZ and Jetstar Carry-On Rules: What Travellers Need to Know (2026)

Navigating Carry-On Rules: What Air New Zealand and Jetstar Want Every Traveler to Understand

If you've ever boarded a bustling flight and immediately felt the frustration of cramped overhead lockers, you're not alone. The struggle to fit your carry-on can turn a simple trip into a stressful ordeal. But here's where it gets controversial: the rules regarding how much you can bring aboard don’t just impact convenience — they are vital for safety, efficiency, and fairness during the flight process.

As airlines throughout Australasia tighten their restrictions on oversized cabin luggage, travelers are left wondering: what exactly are the carry-on regulations, and how do they differ between carriers?

To shed light on this, 1News reached out to New Zealand’s two leading airlines — Air New Zealand and Jetstar — to understand their specific policies and the reasons behind their strict enforcement.

Air New Zealand's Carry-On Policy

Air New Zealand permits each customer to bring one piece of carry-on luggage weighing up to 7 kilograms, along with a small personal item such as a handbag, a laptop bag, or a small backpack.

Rachel Lilley, the airline’s head of regional airports, explained, “Our economy allowance of one carry-on bag of up to 7kg plus a personal item aligns with the space and weight constraints of our overhead lockers. This policy also aims to minimize injury risks to passengers and crew, as well as facilitate smoother boarding processes, helping flights depart on time.”

The airline has observed that oversized or overweight bags cause real problems at boarding.

“Customers arriving with larger or heavier bags often create congestion as space becomes limited, potentially leading to injuries or delays,” Lilley noted. “This can slow down the boarding process when bags need to be rechecked or rearranged, thus impacting the overall schedule.”

She emphasized that the airline applies its rules consistently to ensure fairness for all passengers. “We encourage travelers to check the baggage requirements before they arrive, so everyone can have a smooth and predictable experience,” she added.

Jetstar’s Carry-On Policy

Jetstar’s current policy allows passengers to bring two carry-on items with a combined weight not exceeding 7kg. For those needing more baggage, the airline offers an option to purchase an extra allowance of an additional 7kg, making the total possible weight allowance up to 14kg.

A Jetstar spokesperson highlighted that their rules are designed to keep flights safe and punctual.

“Applying cabin baggage limits across our entire network, including flights within New Zealand, supports safe and on-time operations,” the representative explained.

However, Jetstar openly admits that the current system can sometimes lead to stress — particularly due to weight limits and gate weighing procedures.

“We recognize that our baggage rules — especially weight restrictions — can be a source of frustration for our customers,” they said. “That’s why we are actively reviewing our cabin baggage policies. Our goal is to reduce inconvenience at the gate and make the boarding process smoother for everyone.”

The airline assures that any upcoming changes will involve consultation with staff and aim to enhance the experience for both travelers and frontline employees, all while maintaining safety and punctuality standards. As of now, no definitive changes have been announced.

So, the next time you pack for your flight, ask yourself: are my carry-on bags within the allowed limits, and do I understand the rules of my airline? What do you think — should baggage restrictions be more flexible, or are these rules necessary to keep flights safe and on schedule? Share your thoughts in the comments below; your opinion might spark the next debate in airline travel policies.
